Basements dry differently from the rest of a house. There is less airflow, the walls are masonry below grade and drywall above it, and moisture would rather sit than evaporate. This is the sequence we actually follow, and roughly what you should expect to see happening downstairs on each day of it.
The Ways Louisville Basements Actually Flood
Sump Pump Failure
This is the call we take most often, and it almost never happens on a dry day. The pump gives out during the exact storm it was installed for, because the float switch stuck, the motor burned out, the discharge line froze or clogged, or the power went out and there was no battery backup. Water rises from the lowest point outward, which is why many homeowners notice a damp smell before they ever see a puddle.
Sewer and Storm Drain Backup
Older Louisville neighborhoods sit on combined sewer lines that carry both sewage and storm runoff. When heavy rain overloads that system the water has to go somewhere, and the floor drain in your basement is often the lowest opening in the line. This is category three water. It is not a shop vac job. It calls for containment, removal of anything porous it touched, and antimicrobial treatment.
Supply Line and Water Heater Failure

Concrete, block, exposed framing and storage. Faster to dry, but the contents are usually the real loss. Cardboard boxes sitting on a concrete floor absorb everything.
Crawl Spaces
Low clearance, poor airflow, and a vapor barrier that traps water underneath rather than keeping it out. These take longer to dry than anyone expects and are the most likely to grow mold when they get skipped.
Basement Laundry and Bathrooms
A failed washer hose or a backed up floor drain in a finished laundry room combines contaminated water with finished surfaces, which makes it the most involved version of this job.
