Why Pipes Burst in Louisville Homes
Freezing
Louisville gets just enough hard freezes to catch people out. Water expands as it freezes and pressure builds between the ice plug and a closed faucet until the weakest point in the line gives way. The rupture usually happens in an exterior wall, a crawl space, an unheated garage or an attic, and it often does not announce itself until the thaw, when the ice melts and the line starts discharging into the structure.
Old Galvanized and Polybutylene Lines
Plenty of Louisville housing stock still runs galvanized steel that has been rusting from the inside for decades, or grey polybutylene from the 1980s that turns brittle with age and chlorinated water. Attic Lines
An attic break soaks insulation, which then holds moisture against the ceiling drywall for days. Blown insulation that has been wet does not recover and has to come out.
Under a Slab or in a Crawl Space
These run the longest before anyone notices, sometimes for weeks. A warm spot on the floor, an unexplained jump in the water bill and a musty smell are the usual first clues.
